Brooding

Quote from Mr. Nat referring to period films and their leading men:
"I don't know why you like those movies so much.
The guys are always big jerks!"

I hate to say it, but the hubs has a point.
Darcy, Rochester and even our dear Mr. Thornton do their fair share
of scowling, pouting and snubbing during their stories...
yet they make me swoon like a school girl.

Compare this to real life... if my husband tried to act all grouchy and mysterious,
I'd be tempted to slap him upside the head.

So what is it about moody, cravat-wearing men
that get our hearts all a-flutter?

Maybe next time I watch "North & South,"  I'll count how many times
Thornton furrows his brow.  I just love a good brooder...

Then at the end... a tiny little smile!
My husband may not understand the appeal,
but I don't need to explain myself to you folks, do I?

Just for the record...
Don't worry- I'm not a violent person and never actually slap any family members (even when tempted) although one time I accidentally punched my husband in the jaw while he was tickling me, so he thinks it's funny to tell everyone I'm an abusive wife. (Especially since I'm a big wimp.)

That is what makes them so desirable but in real life, no, I really would not like them and yes they would probably be slapped in the face.

You're right, Nat, no explanation necessary. The mystery would be if you didn't find RA's furrowed brow appealing...that I could never understand. ;)

No, you don't. I understand you ...completely. ;-)

There's no-one that can brood as good as our Richard! Although he also broods "smolderingly" and that's even better! Then I melt right away ... Like when Thornton sees Margaret and Frederick embracing at the train station, wow, baby!

Some men are just born to brood and smoulder...

As they say there is a thin line btw love and hate. I did marry a moody bastard, so I did take the brooding thing to the next level so to speak. That being said, he has the best laugh ever!

I think the moodiness is like this simmering passion, just underneath the surface. And it bubbles up every so often and then it's SWOON BABY!!!!

It's going back to the bad boy conversation, we like to think we can "turn" the moody ones too.

I think the brooding = passion. That's my two cents!

Thornton did brood his way through most of the series, but he had his moments too, like at the annual dinner when the smile came out.

It's fairly obvious why we like these broody, scowling men so much, brooding aside. The choice of actor deliberate so why not enjoy it.

Nope, no explanation needed! Of course we love our wonderful brooders! :D I agree with @Rob with why we love them. They brood because they're so much in love with their heroines but the heroines haven't quite got their head around the heroes' awesomeness yet. The lengths they have to go through to win them over! Sheesh! ;)

The only spousal-hitting I have done is to accidentally hit my hubby on the arm with a Wii-mote when playing tennis on Wii Sports. To my defence, we had a tiny living room at the time!

LOL Nat. I dislocated Hubby's thumb. That will teach him to never ever touch my feet. I didn't mean to do it...sometimes I don't know my own strength..sigh.
He got me back though when after laying a new floor in the kitchen the breakdancer in him came out and did a windmill and kicked me in the back.
I suppose the appeal for me with Thornton is that under all that brooding there's a heart of gold underneath.
He's the kind of man I'd like to be wooed by.

Oh Nat, you certainly don't have to explain yourself. LOL!

I think the appeal is a combination of turning the bad boy and/or finding the heart of gold that perhaps no one else can see. But hey, none of that really has any great appeal unless the guy is hot.

Uh, part of me would like to say that I would have loved North and South no matter how Thornton looked, but the honest part knows I'd be lyin'.

Brooding mystery....well, I'm not sure if it's the moodiness really, but rather what Traxy said, it happens that the heroes have to work to win the gals over, and the fact that they put in the work is what ultimately makes them swoonworthy, otherwise they'd just be moody jerks! (and BTW, I found Darcy to be just a big old pain in the butt, sorry, I know that's heresy for some, but he never quite did it for me, he begrudingly admited feelings for Elizabeth, and who wants to be with someone who likes you but doesn't want to?)

For me the brooders are a more mysterious and cerebral challenge. It fires up the imagination about what's on their minds.

Well put.

I married a brooder who turned out to be a sweethearted man. I still remember the first time I saw him and thinking: I wonder what's going on inside that head.

Words cannot describe the sublime appeal of Mr Thornton. The only thing to do when Thornton Syndrome strikes is to succumb to it and seek the support of those who share the symptoms too.

His 'brooding' was deep and principled.

PS; eating Thorntons's chocolates, whilst not a treatment, does help to manage the symptoms

bZirk said...

Words of wisdom, Myrtle! About succumbing that is. :D

Myrtle said...

Ha Ha bZ, yup, we just have to succumb!!!
I have lost count how many time I wanted to be Margaret, sitting on that seat at the train staion -succumbing:D

@Myrtle
YES! Thornton's chocolates! My daughter brought me some home from England for Christmas! And I had the sublime pleasure of eating some while watching our Richard!
Words cannot describe....!
