Aren't these gorgeous?
I just love JT. *sigh*
These photos are courtesy of the Russian Richard Armitage site, which has an
awesome collection of photos, including some behind the scenes of North & South. Check it out!
This site has also been added under the "RA Sites" tab (under the blog's header)
along with a link to google translator so you can see the site displayed in your language.

Oh Mr. Thornton, if I could be a rabbit in that hat...
Just kidding. I don't even know what that means or what possessed me to write it. Great find Nat.
Great pics.
I watched a fanvid the other day and 'noticed' the hat. RA is very tall himself and DDA is obviously shorter than him, I find amusing that with that long hat he looks more tall, he must have looked even more impressive in person, IMO.
OML :)
Oh my goodness, these are just gorgeous. Where it all began....
The top one, well, words fail me...
Am I incoherent, yes I am....
Where is my medication???
I like them very much!!
These are fabulous!! Thanks for reminding us of the Russian website -- I am going there now! How DO they get these great pictures!?
Great pics and I can almost hear JT singing...
"I'm puttin' on my top hat
Tyin' up my white* tie
Brushin' of my tails"
*I know JT has on a black tie, but I didn't feel right changing Mr. Berlin's lyrics. :)
How is it that standing there drinking a coffee and smoking a ciggy he looks elegant??? He's standing there like a dancer! On another note, seeing the costumes so close up, you really see the detail. They are all quite lovely.
I wonder if it hard to keep those tall hats on?
does he smoke?
Lovely profile shots of John Thornton and Margaret. I love the clarity and quality of the colours.
@Anonymous, word is that Richard used to smoke, or perhaps was a party smoker, but stopped after North and South when he took up running.
It would be hard to imagine how he could possibly maintain his current level of fitness and smoke. Wouldn't it?
thanks
Wow! The hat makes him look around 7 feet tall! LOL
Isn't that the essential John Thornton right there? With his book and his gift of fruit/food?
Nice contrast or complement between the hard, angular JT and the soft, rounded Margaret Hale.
I love JT too. Just rewatched North and South, and it had been a long time. It's still just as sweet as ever.
That Russian site is just consistently good!
Like Phylly3, I am wondering how do the Russians get these Behind the scenes pics? I haven't seen any on the English language ones, LOL! Maybe I just missed them.
@Nat, thanks for letting us know about the google translator thing :)
ok, i'm back. I feel really dumb here, but when I look at the pics on the Russian site all I see are the thumbnails. I can't seem to enlarge them to really see anything. I have no idea how people can see RA smoking. All I can see is that it's him and DDA, and a microphone in some of the shots. That's it!
Somebody please help! What am I doing wrong?
ok, back again. I don't know what's going on. But when i clicked on Nat's green highlighted "behind the scenes" link, I was able to click on the individual pics and see larger versions. But when I tried to get to the same pics via translating the website first, I was unable to do so. I don't know why. Any ideas?
@TM
Step 1 -- click on the link
Step 2 -- click on the first thumb nail
Step 3 -- At this point you should see the first pic, with the thumb nails underneath, click on the larger image in the middle of your screen
Step four -- that pic should open into a larger image in a sep widow.
I use Internet Explorer, not firefox. I hope this helps.
Thanks Nat for posting. I hadn't seen some of these shots either. I didn't realise RA was a smoker either until I saw that shot - all I can think of is the smoke smell hanging on those lovely costumes. Oh well, I guess RA does have some vices ...lol... maybe chocoholism is a healthier one though :)
PS: Am just about to watch N&S again but I have been slightly distracted by P&P 1995.
This shot is frameworthy and the outlines reminded me of your cameo post. Yes, the hat is very striking but something else very much too. ;)
Anyone else notice those very pink and red pigs in the cart??!!!
I'm also in the middle of a N&S rewatch, a bit stretched out, brought it with me for our week on the beach and hope for some uninterrupted time. *sigh*
@Rob, thanks a bunch!I'll follow your tips. Plus, I was using firefox, not IE, maybe that does have something to do with it?
@mulubinba - "all I can think of is the smoke smell hanging on those lovely costumes" - Yes, my thoughts exactly, along with having to act opposite someone who has just smoked! Ugh...no amount of mentos can take that odour away!
Love the pictures though! Thanks Nat.
When I first became a fan, his smoking was quite a source of discussion. It's been at least six years since that picture was taken. I wonder if he still smokes. He seems to be really into staying physically fit, so it's not unreasonable to think he's dropped the habit.
However, I've heard that it's one of the most difficult addictions to shed almost on par with some much more serious drug addictions. Having grown up around two chain smokers, I've witnessed how difficult it can be for a smoker. My parents smoked almost three packs a day -- yes, they each smoked almost 60 cigarettes a day when I was growing up; smoked from the time they got up until they decided to get into bed. Thankfully, they never smoked in bed, and I'm happy to say both did walk away from it eventually. If those two can do it, anyone can.
