Strike Back DVD Info

Run, Porter, run!!!
I just love this new "Strike Back" photo.
Muscles!  Tan arms!  Guns!
Damsels in distress being rescued by the hot John Porter!

You will be able to see Richard Armitage in all of his camouflaged glory soon.
"Strike Back" will be released on DVD June 14, 2010 and can be pre-ordered HERE.
Unfortunately, it is only available on European Region 2 or multi-region DVD players.
(Dang it... I don't have one of those.)

Thanks to Sue for the heads up on this nice bit of news. :)

I really can't believe that I am getting so excited about Strike Back - normally not my sort of thing. I have even read the book!!! But, there you go, that's the RA effect for you.

Nat,

There is software that allows you to view Region 2 on your pc PLUS region-free dvd players are quite inexpensive. I will try to remember to email you the links tonight.

June 14? Let's see, Russell Crowe's Robin Hood opens 14 May and this is released 14 June? I foresee an exceptional summer.

Very exciting picture! Thanks to Sue and you for posting it!
I read the book and liked it (bought it for my hubby). He finally read it and liked it too! Yay! My plan is working!

Gee the show's coming out in april and the dvd is coming out 2 months later. I wonder if this is normal to have such a short gap. Hopefully they'll have had time to stuff lots of extras in it.

Oh good, so it is going to come on TV. I was getting worried that it was only going to go direct to DVD. I am hoping that some kind soul will put it up on Youtube so i can watch it and not wait for US DVD release.

And yep, don't think that I'd care much to watch it if RA wasn't in it :)

PS does anyone know if netflix has to wait for US release dates for their direct streaming option of videos, as opposed to getting a DVD in the mail?

I busted my Windows Mediaplayer by changing my region once too often, so I got stuck in Region 1. For about 50 dollar I purchased DVDXplayer, a region-free software!
Now I'm able to watch everything!
Great news on Strike Back!
I've ordered it right away!

Thanks for posting! I'm looking forward to this even though I picked u the book in a shop, read a few pages and decided not to spend $27.00 on it. Maybe I should check it out in the library.

flandersdreamer said...

Mulubinba, you have to read it, it's fantastic! Just picture RA in the Porter character and it glides down like honey!

Myrtle said...

phylly3 - I bought it for my hubby too!!

I would agree, the book is perhaps not the most taxing read, but imagining RA in some of the scenes -"glides down like honey" describes it perfectly!!! Bring it on!

This is so NOT my thing, but the picy is hot, hot, hot. Spooks was a huge stretch for me and I'm not sure about this one. But I'm sure if our guy is in it, it'll be fab.

I am going to put an open plea out there to Mr. Armitage, please, please, pretty please do something more romantic for your female fans. We want to see you as the "romantic" lead, just one more time. Then you can go back to all the testostrone, guns, and war stuff. Throw us a bone. Please.

Oh what the hell! Here's the cut and paste of the article from the BBC press office.....

The Classic Serial –
Clarissa: The History Of A Young Lady Ep 1/ 4
Sunday 14 March
3.00-4.00pm BBC RADIO 4

Clarissa lead Richard Armitage appears (above) in BBC period drama North And SouthSamuel Richardson's Clarissa is a heartbreaking and compulsive piece of epistolary storytelling and one of the world's greatest novels. Published in 1747, it was the precursor to and inspiration for many of the great European novels which followed in its wake.

The young and beautiful Clarissa is courted by the rake Lovelace, who tricks her into his power, carries her off to London, and rapes her. Clarissa then falls into decline. Lovelace becomes involved in an avenging duel with Clarissa's cousin, and Clarissa's family and friends must live with the guilt and shame of their own neglect and betrayal of her.

This new, four-part dramatisation by Hattie Naylor stars Richard Armitage (BBC One's Spooks) as Robert Lovelace and Zoe Waites (Roxanne, The Bristol Old Vic) as Clarissa Harlowe. The company includes: Alison Steadman; Deborah Findlay; Miriam Margolyes; Oliver Milburn; John Rowe; Julian Rhind-Tutt; Adrian Scarborough; Stephen Critchlow; Cathy Sara; Sophie Thompson; Ellie Beaven; Lisa Hammond; and Linda Broughton.

In this first part, beautiful young heiress Clarissa Harlowe is dangerously attracted by the wiles of the notorious libertine Robert Lovelace. Threatened by an imminent marriage arranged with the odious suitor her family have found for her, Lovelace persuades Clarissa to flee with him.

Wow! Sue, that is very exciting news! But I have to say I think I'm relieved it's on Radio so I don't have to SEE him as a TRULY bad guy.
I don't think THIS is the "bone" that @Rob is looking for!
I really love him as a romantic hero, although he IS a fabulous blackguard.
Although the book Strikeback is not "classic literature", his character of John Porter is very heroic and there is a bit of romance so it should keep us happy!
@Mulubinba -- the book is also out in paperback, so you don't need to spend too much on it for your own copy!

Starheart said...

I wonder if non-UK listeners of the bbc4 iplayer will be able to get access for this Clarissa serial?

@Rob said...

@Philly3 -- A rapist and a blackguard...not what I had in mind. But I am sure he'll be fab, none the less.

Myrtle said...

Sorry, but I am here for a rant!
I have just read on one of the other forums that Naxos Audio Books have released 'North and South'. Hurrah you might say - well NO!! becuase our boy isn't narrating, it's a woman!!!.Which I suppose is probably taking the story through the eyes of Margaret??

Do you think maybe RA didn't want to read it?????

I will come back when I have calmed down.

Myrtle said...

Went to Anger Management class ha ha, so I have just ordered it from Amazon, couldn't resist it even though RA isn't the narrator :( I am sure Clare W will have done a fab job.)

Now, back to JP. I'm sure we would all love to see RA as leading man in another period drama, but it must be great fun for him to have a go at 'macho' boy with big gun saves girl from baddies, sort of thing. So I have decided just to enjoy it, biceps and all:D I hope that 'Charlie' might have more depth for us to enjoy.
As for 'Clarissa', this will make interesting listening! It certainly is a high quality cast.

Sue said...

Here's a link to Wikipedia and a summary of the plot from Clarissa.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarissa

Sounds like he is playing yet another complicated and guilt-ridden character. Richard you dirty dog you! He's gone and done it again hasn't he? Made us feel sorry for the bad boy! Blast him, he manages to do it every time!

For playing different region DVDs, try the free VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc Try that first before buying any software. It works a lot of the time.

Oh, and SQUEEEEE about Strike Back!

Twinkling Moon said...

Hey all! I am thinking back on the RA roles that I know of, and the only one that I can think of where he really is the "good guy" as in isn't a first class jerk or worst, AND gets the girl is N&S. Am I missing some of his other work where his role fits the above?

I ask this because I seem to have this feeling that his fan base loves him in those dreamy sort of roles, but honestly, he hasn't really done any since that N&S production in '04. I wonder if it has been deliberate on his part. Especially having roles where he isn't always the honorable guy, It seems as though he is so afraid of being seen as the "tottie" is that the right word, my UK friends, (I would say "hottie" as an american) that he doesn't take on roles with a strong romantic story, where he is the good guy and gets the girl.

It sounds like that even in the upcoming Strike Back, he will be the "hero" but not necessarily the faithful husband, which, if that is true, adds that whole, "should I really like this guy?" which of course has been the trouble with Guy of G. I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into stuff.

Any thoughts anyone?

PS I don't care if it's a period piece per se that RA is in, I'd just like to see him be the good guy who doesn't get crapped on, you know?

Nat at RA FanBlog said...

TM, obviously you haven't seen RA as Harry Kennedy in the last 2 episodes of "Vicar of Dibley." You have to watch it!!! Harry is a sweet, loveable character who isn't a baddie, nor "gets crapped on." :) If you have Netflix, search for under- "The Vicar of Dibley: A Holy Wholly Happy Ending" Both episodes come on one disc. Not only is it cute, but hilarous. I was laughing out loud through the whole thing. (Also check out the VoD section of my blog under "topics" on the right side bar.)

I'll try and see if I can remember to record the radio show (thanks for the info! :D) in case non-UK fans can't hear it. :)

Twinkling Moon. Oh those perfect characters and no flux? So boring!

Radioplay ´Clarissa´, to me a new project on the horizon (thanks Sue). Really intriguing story and cast! Love to hear that, if possible.
That Lovelace guy is a nasty piece. How a woman could get go all mental and die because of a man, that´s quite something. For me slightly unbelieveable, but for the fainthearted probably not. (Nooo, I don´t mean ´him´, and yes, ´he´ would be looking into the ´good´ side of the man. There you go!)

@Rob said...

Monet was sweet too. Lucas is sort of a good/complicated guy. I would love, love, love to see him play the hero that gets the girl at the end. At this point it would be going against type for him.

I wonder if he consciously chooses to play the baddies or if he gets type cast? Just thinking out loud.

What do you ladies think? Would you like to see him play a hero? Maybe Nat will do a poll for us? :O

Sue said...

I don't think that it is because he likes to play baddies so much as he looks for layers in a character which usually means they are complicated and not a case of always being "what you see is what you get" kind of thing. After all nobody is perfect or entirely without sin (certainly not me anyhow!). Goody two shoes are just no fun, a little bit of the darkide never goes amiss with an audience. (or me)

WitchyWoman said...

OOH can't wait for this now. I know Richard will be excellent in it.
I read the book(the things I do for you Richard) and thought it was awful(I have heard that Chris Ryan didn't write this and other books too).
Loved the character of Porter of course and that was only because I knew Richard was playing him so it helped greatly having his image running through my head...helped me finsh the book.
The may actually be something else of Richards that hubby won't mind watching with me.

Twinkling Moon said...

@ Nat, Oh my gosh! I feel so stupid, yes I did see RA in VofD, how could I have forgotten? I guess what I meant was I was thinking of him in a serious role where his character does face some challenges (and therefore is layered and not boring) but is essentially a good guy, and he rightfully gets the girl.

I don't think that being "good" makes you boring; I'd bet that most of us RA fans are actually "good girls" and what we believe to be RA's essential "goodness" is what draws us to him, and I don't think anyone of us considers ourself to be a boring person (at least I hope I'm not, lol!)

I think JA does that well with her stories, we root for the heros, but they aren't really boring and there is some sort of mystery/story that keeps the audience interested in how the tale is told. That is what I was trying to get at earlier, but I think I failed.

Also, I think it would be neat to see RA as a father figure in some role; I understand that he was a dad in BTS but I'm not sure how big of a part that played in the story. I think I could see him interacting well with kids and being the protective dad. What do you guys think?

Sue said...

Twinkling Moon,
It was nice to see Richard interact with his young screen daughter in BTS and also in the Shakespeare Re-told MacBeth where he was a husband and father. I think you could slightly tell that he wasn't entirely used to dealing with kids though. I think actors who have kids are more at ease and less awkward acting the onscreen parent. He was very tender in both roles as a dad. Especially in MacBeth when he was told that his wife and daughter had been murdered. I thought he acted that scene especially well.

Twinkling Moon said...

@Sue, yes, I did get to see RA in MacBeth from Shakespeare Retold and I really liked him in the role; I particularly remember his response in learning about his wife and daughter. I have only seen fragments of BTS via Youtube, so don't remember really being blown away by any particular moment. But I think exploring that type of role to a greater degree would be a way for him to expand his acting skills.

Afterall, he has done period drama, contemporary suspense, action-adventure type roles, and comedy. Am I forgetting something? I just think husband/father would be a different direction for him to go in and it would be neat to see him in something like that. I'd like to see how he'd do.
