PJ knows his stuff.

I'm not talking about this PJ...
but about Peter Jackson~
recently knighted, Oscar-winning director:
I wanted to highlight a few excerpts from THIS Entertainment Weekly
article entitled "Hobbit director Peter Jackson talks about casting a heartthrob dwarf."

Hmm... I wonder which actor they're referring to as being a heartthrob?
Surely not this guy, because he's definitely not the type, right?

EW journalist, Josh Rottenberg, wondered:
"What was Jackson doing hiring a hunky actor to play a character most often depicted
in illustrations — and in the 1977 animated Hobbit movie — as a squat, crabby,
Wilford Brimley-ish old dwarf with a long white beard?  Jackson tells EW the choice is
actually right in line with the casting of Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn and
Orlando Bloom as Legolas in the Lord of the Rings trilogy."

Jackson's answer:
“Thorin Oakenshield is a tough, heroic character, and he certainly should give Leggie and
Aragorn a run for their money in the heartthrob stakes — despite being four feet tall.”

After reading this article, I've come to this conclusion:
Peter Jackson must not only be a genius when it comes to movie-making, but
in the ways women think as well!  He supplies the great action scenes male viewers
will enjoy, PLUS throws in the eye candy we ladies love while he's at it.

I shall now provide you with examples of said eye candy
(for those of you not familiar with "The Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy)
to fill you in on the hunkiness that it holds as proof of my conclusion above:
I can't decide whether I enjoy watching Aragorn or Legolas more.
I also have a crush on Boromir (Sean Bean) and Eomer (Karl Urban):
My husband can never see this post, or he'll know the REAL reason
why I love watching "The Lord of the Rings" with him so much.  Haha!

I'm sure Richard, along with these men, would rather be remembered for their fine
acting skills than squee-factor... but they should also accept the fact that we
can't help but notice their hotness displayed while defeating evil. :)

Peter Jackson understands our needs.  Thank you, Mr. J.
We look forward to seeing our "heartthrob dwarf" in action.

Funnily enough, Aragorn does absolutely nothing for me. Legolas is pretty, but he's kind of "too" pretty, which just makes me put him in the category of pretty-boys and I've never been interested in those. (Leo DiCaprio? Not for me. Brad Pitt? He's starting to come out of it simply from an age perspective. I can acknowledge that both are handsome men and very talented actors, I just don't "go" for them!)

I was among the people who, when seeing LotR, was in the "Aragorn? Pheh. Give me Boromir any day!" - and at the time, I wasn't even aware of Sean Bean! And Eomer? More my type as well.

Maybe that's one of the things with RA, that his features aren't those of a pretty-boy. They're all angular and that nose is very prominent and all that, but WOW, he's like catnip and is absolutely gorgeous to me. :)

Very impressive if PJ (aww, Prince John! <3) thinks like women with his casting choices. He's done good so far. :) And also, can't help but noticing that he seems to have lost a lot of weight. Maybe from all the stress surrounding getting these films done?

Funny post Nat and I love Peter Jackson's word. He got it right the first time, so he will get it right now.

@Traxy I was the total oposite, reading the LOTR books in my teenage years I had a crush on Aragorn, so his casting was crucial to me, besides Jackson doing the books justice and he did not disappoint me, he got Aragorn absolutely right and Viggo Mortenson did such a great job. He is another great, beautful actor in my book.

But now bring on the heartthrob dwarf - I can't wait :)

well, if your hubs sees this post, you can tell him it's just a cover up for you actually watching the LOTR because you have a thing for those nasty Orks :)))

KArl Urban was always my favourite part of LOTR beside Blanchett.

Peter Jackson certainly knows how to keep the ladies happy (as far as supplying the eye candy anyhow). I love Sean Bean's down-to-earth voice and hope Richard's will be in a similar vein, but then this is Hollywood and I'm not so sure Americans would be able to decipher northern dialects, so perhaps not.

I can't help but wonder what Richard will look like as Thorin, with short stumpy legs! Will his bum be dragging on the floor I ask myself!

I wonder how they will make Richard look like a dwarf? I haven't read "The Hobbit" Are there any other characters who are not dwarfish? If most of the characters are dwarfs you really don't have to do too much..You know, it's not like Richard would be standing next to an Aragorn character and have folks wonder why he is taller than that character...

I'm glad that Peter Jackson understands the "hunk" factor..So maybe Richard's dwarf character may be smaller but still handsome...Like his hair may be longer..He may have a beard, but the handsomeness will still show threw...He can do the emotions and strength..we already know that..and that is what will make him extra adorable and sexy...

Oh yeah, I'm with Traxy and others who thought Boromir was the eye candy in the LOTR films...:)Sean Bean played a very emotionally torn character..So maybe that is what PJ has in store for Richard's character..so he is not just a one-dimensional character...

VIGGO! SEAN! RICHARD! Yes, Peter Jackson gets it!!! He lost weihgt for health reasons and probably to look hotter himself! His asute casting choices are the only reason I have watched LOTR, he better make RA look hot like GoG!
<3 you Halloween music.

Great Post Nat and great comments! I love LOTR and can't wait for the Hobbit to come out! RA is going to be fantastic. I can't wait to see his portrayal of this character, as has been said before using mostly his voice and his eyes. (We all love both of those traits of his) until then we will have to be content to watch him wherever we can find him :)

Oh and... I love all of the actors you mentioned, and the characters that they played in LOTR. They are all Hot - esp Sean Bean - but RA is still my #1

Thank you Nat!
Ah, yes Sean Bean-Swoon! Can we bring Boromir back for The Hobbit?
I'm very glad Peter Jackson is so taken with RA and letting the world know how wonderful he'll be as Thorin. He seems to appreciate RA as a person also. Can't wait to see our "heartthrob dwarf" on the big screen in 3D!

Well, I'd say Jackson has shown he knows how to cast. But I'm not sure if I expect RA to deliver his character the way VM and OB did theirs, making them heart throbs. I mean, their characters more resembled everyday, humans. I haven't read the books so I really don't know what the dwarf world is supposed to be like.

I think RA will make his character compelling and draw viewers in, but I don't think his character will set him in the world of being a teenage heart throb. But really, who cares? The man can act and now he's got a chance to show that to millions of people! Good for him!

Ditto (I know it's lazy, but I can't say anything better than you lovely people put it.)

@littlevictories, sometimes that's the best way to leave a comment :)

You do wonder just how he will look in the Hobbit movie..Will he look like the dwarfs from the other three LOTR films, or will Peter Jackson go for a total new look...

Whether he comes out looking like a hearthrob or not, we know he can act as others have said..So it can only help his career..and get him noticed by even more directors...

I'm a newcomer as far as adding comments goes but not a newcomer to your blog Nat. Have to say I love your sense of humour (Canadian here hence the Canadian spelling!) I'm ashamed to admit I have not seen ANY of the LOTR movies which I'm told I have to rectify ASAP!! I am SO looking forward to seeing RA in Digital 3D but am happy to see him in anything (if you know what I mean;) if it means him finally getting the exposure that has been way too long in coming, especially on this side of the pond. Very happy that Strike Back is just being aired here in Canada and I loved every minute of the first four parts. The last two parts will be shown next Friday! Can hardly wait. Even more *shirtless* views!!:)

Great post Nat! Oh, and thanks for the reminder from Anonymous -- about the Hobbit being in 3D! How exciting is THAT!!? Imagine that brooding stare looming out from the screen at you! The rest of the world is not going to be ready for a huge dose of Armitagemania! :p

Super post! Thank you, as always, for the humour (and astuteness) and visuals.

This could be a marvellous role, even if RA plays it on his knees with a bushy beard...Hoping Cate Blanchett is cast. And the two hatch future projects. Perhaps they'd loath each other off-screen, but can't imagine a better acting match.

Yes, finally SB on TV here.
