Spooks 9.5

Spoiler Warning:
This post: minor spoilers in the form of screencaps.
Comments section: major spoilers due to open discussion.

 Another week, another episode.
I enjoyed this one better that the previous two.
I'm not sure why, exactly... maybe because it left "the double life"
storyline on the back burner and focused on more of the good ol' MI-5 action.

Random thoughts.

Thornton flashback with that stance and stare:

Gizzy flashback with those black, buckled boots:

Lucas's concern for Beth was sweet.

If I can't have a Lucas-Beth fling,
maybe I'd settle for a Dimitri-Beth romance.
(I'm glad Dimitri had some of the spotlight in this episode.)

In this moment, I thought of Ros.
(Probably because she was the tough nut and usually
first to confront the baddies face-to-face.)

THE TWIST!!!
Others have said they suspected such a twist.
I had no clue and was all a-gasp at the end, wishing I could immediately watch the next episode.
(Which airs tonight, thank goodness... I can't handle the suspense!)

Feel free to share your thoughts on Spooks 9 episodes 1-5 only.
Please no spoilers for future episodes.  Thanks!
and Simply Sophia Myles Gallery.

My thoughts exactly Nat, on ALL counts. I did not suspect that twist and I wanted to continue to watch the next episode right away. It felt more like the previous seasons, which were so entertaining.

lookig forward to the next one :)

Me too! This alternate plotline is driving me crazy. I am hoping I'll be able to watch tonight -- last week I was lucky enough to see it the same day and not a day later or so. Can't wait!

I agree with you Nat. I enjoyed the break from Lucas/John and Maya (and Vaughn/Michael)...well, until the very end. It was an exciting episode and brought back Lucas the hero of the day. Looking forward to watching tonight with a bit of trepidation.

Good episode, plus, I actually understood exactly what was going on, without having to watch it a
2nd time. Who -hoo!!!!!

I was however, expecting the last few minutes (having read every spoiler - shame on me).

I too, await tonights epsiode with trepidation......

OMG, not another RH S3 E13 here I hope. However, our Guy is getting really busy and there is just not enough of him to go around. Tonight is gonna be scary but then it is Halloween week!

I suspect that last few episodes will be exciting and dramatic...Something big is going to happen..We just don't know exactly what..But it seems Lucas/John is going on an emotional ride the next few episodes..The writers have been hinting about stuff going on emotionally with Harry as well..So you just don't know...It's interesting that both Harry and Lucas have been re-evaluating their lives..When Lucas was in Harry's office and Harry was going on about losing yourself..Happening so fast you don't notice it..Something like that..Lucas probably thought Harry was referring to him..[Lucas]..but Harry was also talking about himself...Both Harry and Lucas are striving for what they can't have..Lucas wants Maya but she may be tangled in with Vaughn..and Harry really wants Ruth..but she keeps putting him off..It would be so hard to do the jobs they do while dealing with all this emotional stuff...

Well said, Violet! There are distinct parallels between the two men emotionally right now. Harry certainly has seemed 'troubled' this series.

I hate the destruction of the character. My guess is that he will have a mental breakdown and be put away. Meh. Not liking all the Lucas melodrama. Love the rest!

Actually, I really want to talk about how good he looks in these pix (you always pick the best). He looks really, really, really good

I thought that in the first 2 eps he looked really rough, rather exhausted, scruffy and grey, and just somehow "off". Now---- yowza!

OK haven't seen it yet, just figured out the twist, but that's because I have a suspicious mind -- comes from working for the Governemtn, I am sure. While waiting to find out if I am right about said twist, let me wonder aloud if Lucas isn't stronger than we might think? To change identities so successfully AND survive a Russian prison? To me that means a VERY strong mind.

@Joan Crenshaw

You would think so. And yet his behaviour is becoming increasingly bizarre, stupid. He's behaving like a fruitcake. That's what I mean by the destruction of the character. He's acting in ways that make no sense and are inconsistent with his character from the previous 2 series.
Madness is the only explanation, IMO :).

Perhaps it's because of post-hypnotic suggestion or some deep brainwashing? Could it be that "John" is the memory implant? :tearing out hair:

I believe that Maya is up to no good along with Vaughn. I envy those able to watch it in real time. right. now.

Lucas is strong, but he is also emotional..But who wouldn't be after being in prison for eight years? He wanted his first wife back, then Sarah Caulfield, and now Maya...Each relationship has not been "calming" for him...It only added to his stress..No wonder he is acting like a fruitcake..Thanks for your comments Myrtle...:) I think the Big surprise may be with Harry toward the end..I am not sure what it is..We still really don't know what "Albany" is...It's this season's "Sugarhorse"...

As for Lucas/Richard looking "scruffy"...Maybe it's cos' he got a late start that day on the way to work..He said in an interview that he gets picked up by a driver who takes him to the set..I think the driver picks him up 5am...But sometimes, Richard is not ready until 5:30am..the driver is knocking on his door..Maybe Richard was overly tired those days..Didn't hear the alarm...He says he scrambles to pick up any clothes he can find..[even those on the floor]..I think he is adorable when he is scruffy...

OMG I loved this episode!!! I agree, I think Maya is in with Vaughan too. As for Lucas looking scruffy, I love it! :)

I thought the overall story was better written in this epi than some of the other ones in this season. I definitely liked it more because there was less of this Maya/Vaughn/Jo-cas nonsense.

I'm hoping they can clear up what the heck Albany has to do with anything in the few epis they have left. I'm worried they are going to have to rush things though because they didn't really tie the Albany plot into the happenings on the Grid throughout the show, which will probably leave me dissatisfied.

Well, I'm still rooting for Lucas. I guess I'm helplessly hopeful :)

Yeah see, the remarks about Vaughan are spoilers, girls. Not that I care. I downloaded Ep 5 last night and fast-forwarded to the last 3 minutes.

Here's Lucas who spent 8 years in a Russian prison because he wouldn't betray his country and he neglects the mission for this Vaughan person? WHATEVER he did before, it better be pretty hideous for me to buy this plot twist.

As for the women in his life, I can see where he is trying to establish human connections after so many years away. It's PTSD, i think. He KNEW he was divorced, yet he needed that human connection in his mind to survive, I THINK. No explanation for Sarah.

I am just very annoyed that the writers are doing this to Lucas. It doesn't fit.

I totally agree!

Dont forget the debacle of RH3! I wanted to strangle the writers and then they let Guy die a pretty inglorious death and Marion came back to escort to wherever!

twinkling moon said...

@judith, yep, big debacle on RH! I feel poor RA can't catch a break with his scripts in terms of a credible story, especially in terms of a love interest, lately. Let's see, we already mentioned the big mess of RH, now Spooks has us all confused, and JP in SB also left many of us wondering too.

Well, I'm guessing a love interest won't be an issue in the Hobbit for him, LOL!

Colleen said...

Here's a thought, I read in an interview that RA wanted something like a "peaceful death for Lucas" if the writers chose to go that direction with Lucas' character. Well, how about that it will be a peaceful death for "Lucas North" because he doesn't exist. "Lucas North" can die peacefully and John (whatever his last name is) can start to live his life. I am hoping Harry chooses to cut him some slack and he and Mya can ride off into the sunset...happy ever after. That is if she isn't a badie! IF RA leaves at the end of this season, I just really want a happy ending for him - no more RH season 3 endings :)

I agree with others here..I hope the last few episodes are not rushed...

Joan Crenshaw is right on the money about Lucas being strong enough to be in prison for 8 years, yet he chucks everything now...He literally just got a promotion and Harry's trust and now he doesn't mind ruining that?...

I can see how he wants love and normalcy in this cold world, but he hasn't seen Maya in 15 years..He really doesn't know her..She could have changed..Just like he did...Maybe he is getting Harry back for something..Remember Lucas thought that Harry wasn't in all that much of a rush to get him out of prison..He was told this by his captors, but he did seem to come to believe it...

If they do dispose of Lucas..They will need another strong character...Beth and Dimitri are too new..That leaves only Ruth and Harry...At least when Adam was killed off they had Roz as an already established strong character to take over...just in case the Lucas character didn't take off...

Really ticked off with what the writers of Series 9 have done. I have Series 7 on DVD and just watched Series 8 a few days ago on YT and even though I'm sure they needed to up their game this year why did they have to change Lucas so drastically? Yes, I know it's *just* a show on TV but they turned his whole character and back story on its head. Lucas could have died so many times proving his loyalty to *Queen and Country*. Mind you RA probably loved the challenge of turning out NOT to be who we (or he apparently) thought he was! I'm just praying that in the end - if this HAS to be his end - that I too am proved wrong and it will be both peaceful AND heroic. PLEEASE!
